Why have your jewellery valued?

There are multiple reasons you may choose, or need, to have your jewellery valued. Some of these include:

1. Insurance Claims: A current valuation certificate is essential for insurance purposes, as it ensures your insurer compensates you fully for lost or stolen items. Most insurers require updates every two to four years.

2. Proof of Ownership: A valuation certificate with high-definition photos serve as proof of ownership and existence, especially for inherited pieces without receipts.

3. Selling Your Jewellery: An independent appraisal is crucial for obtaining a fair price when selling your jewellery, as it provides detailed information that aligns with market trends.

4. Estate Planning: Accurate valuations are important for estate planning and distribution of assets among heirs.

5. Divorce Settlements: Valuations can assist in fair division of assets during divorce proceedings.

Types of Valuations

A detailed assessment that estimates the likely replacement price if bought in a shop. This type of valuation is often used by insurance companies.

Retail

A fair and reasonable second-hand price when someone wants to sell an item to a member of the public. In such cases, the valuer acts as an unbiased expert and GST, sales tax or duty is not included in the valuation.

Private Sale

An estimate of a reasonable second-hand price between a willing buyer and seller in a fair or specialised market without time constraints.

Non-Forced Sale

The price that can be expected when an article must be sold within a short time frame in potentially non-ideal market conditions.

Forced Sale

The minimum hammer price achievable in an ideal auction market, where time is not a factor. This figure does not include premiums or commissions which can vary at each auction

Auction Reserve

The Family Court may require a valuation of jewellery in a divorce settlement. Written directions are provided by the solicitors with the valuation usually based on “fair market value”, although this may vary.
